To me, summer has always been a seasonal stretch of road trips, backyard BBQs, beach days, late nights and soaking up some much-needed rays with family and friends.
It has also held a very special place for music ― When I reminisce on past summers, many of my most fond moments were shaped by what was playing in the background. Music has the power to create profound experiences and this can definitely translate into how we go about crafting our playlists.
If you’re feeling the pressure, don’t fret ― Below are 7 tips and tricks to help you organize a playlist that will make your summer one you’ll never forget!
1) Be open to suggestions
If it weren’t for my friends and family, I wouldn’t have discovered some of the artists and bands I listen to now. Don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations ― your playlist will benefit greatly from it.
2) Spotify is your best friend
What I enjoy most about this beloved music service is that at the top of every artist’s Spotify page, there are lists of artists that are similar to the one you are currently jamming out to. This feature has helped me to find new favourites, catering to my music taste, and has relieved me of having to go on an extensive music treasure hunt for every playlist!
3) Leave behind summer anthems and go deep
Yes, we all have those summer hits that we subconsciously add to our playlists each year, but try switching it up by choosing lesser-known tunes from artists; ones that don’t play over and over again on the radio!
4) Mix it up
Fast songs? Check! Slow songs? Check! Add a combination of both upbeat and mellow to your summer playlist and please all moods.
5) Throw in a few randoms
With every playlist, I like to add one or two songs that I wouldn’t normally listen to ― it gives it an edge!
6) Take advantage of festival season
One of the best ways to keep your summer playlist filled with fresh tunes, is to check out who is playing the summer festival circuit. You’re bound to come across someone you like!
7) Share your masterpiece with your fellow music-lovers
